How ValueSort Works — How to Sort by Price Per Unit

ValueSort - Sort supermarket products by price per unit.

What ValueSort Does

ValueSort is a free browser extension that helps you find the best value items when shopping online. It reads the price per unit information shown on supported supermarket sites and reorders the products so that the cheapest per unit is shown at the top.

Instead of sorting by total price or relevance, ValueSort focuses on the actual cost per kg, per litre or per item, so you can quickly see which product is actually the best value.

Where It Works

ValueSort currently supports the following UK supermarkets:

On these sites, ValueSort looks at the same product information you can already see on the page (price and price per unit), using that it reorders the website.

How Sorting by Unit Price Works

When you open a supported supermarket page, ValueSort:

  1. Finds each product listed on the page.
  2. Reads the price and price per unit text that the supermarket displays.
  3. Converts different units (like 100g, 1kg, 75cl) into 1kg, 1L, or 1 item.
  4. Calculates the new unit price.
  5. Reorders the products from cheapest to most expensive per unit. Putting per item at the bottom as items can be different sizes

This all happens in your browser while you browse normally.

Handling Special offers and Discounts

Many supermarket pages include offers such as Clubcard prices, multibuys or temporary discounts. Where possible, ValueSort uses the offer price to calculate the unit price, so you see the real cost per unit instead of the non-discounted price.

If an item is missing unit price information or the item is out of stock, ValueSort will skip it.

What ValueSort Doesn’t Do

ValueSort does not:

It simply reorganises the products you already see so that the best value options are easier to find.

Privacy and Safety

All of the work happens locally in your browser. ValueSort only reads product data on the page in order to calculate and apply sorting. It does not track you across sites, create a profile, or upload your browsing data to a server.

Getting Started

To start using ValueSort:

  1. Install the extension:
  2. Toggle the extension to be on
  3. Open a supported supermarket website and search for an item
  4. Wait until the page loads — ValueSort will automatically run and reorder the products.

You can then browse as normal, knowing the best value options are shown first.
